Ingredients:
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 cups beef broth
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Baguette slices
- Gruyere cheese, grated
Instructions:
Melt the butter and olive oil in a big pot over medium-low heat
Spread out the onions and sugar
It will take about 20 to 25 minutes of stirring every now and then until the onions are caramelized
Add the minced garlic and cook for two more minutes
Add dried thyme and beef broth
To taste, add salt and black pepper
Let the soup cook on low heat for 15 to 20 minutes so the flavors can blend
Warm up the broiler in the oven
Put the soup in bowls that can go in the oven
Add a slice of baguette to each bowl and sprinkle Gruyere cheese on top of the bread
After putting the bowls on a baking sheet, broil them until the cheese melts and starts to bubble
